Readers and critics have been wowed by G. B. Trudeau's epic masterpiece 40 A Doonesbury Retrospective, which follows Trudeau's ever-expanding cast through four decades of cultural turbulence and change. This seminal work is now available digitally in a four-volume e-book set for the first time. This third volume of 40 covers the years 1990 to 1999 for the celebrated cartoon strip.
"[Trudeau is] Dickensian in his range of characters," writes Garry Wills in The New York Review of Books. "Trudeau has just kept improving, year after year, in part because he stays so close to changing events. . . .."

I originally wrote this review for the first book of the retrospective (40: A Doonesbury Retrospective, 1970 to 1979), but am posting it here as well since all four books are essentially the same:"I have no experience with the hardcover collection this Kindle Fire edition is based on but I can only assume it reproduces the actual pages fairly accurately, albeit smaller. That being said, I have gone and read some of these original Doonesbury strips in various locations online and I have never seen them look so clean. The black and white on the Kindle Fire screen is incredibly crisp and they look like they were drawn yesterday.
I was also extremely impressed by the functionality of this Kindle Fire version of the book. Before purchasing the book I downloaded the sample version to see what it was like. When I first started flipping through the pages I was disappointed because while the pages themselves were bright and colorful, the text was pretty small and difficult to read. After about five or six pages, I wanted to see if I could zoom in. I tried pinching and pressing to no avail. Somehow I hit upon double tapping on the text and was amazed when a text box with large, perfectly legible words popped up and the rest of the page dimmed behind it. Even more impressive, you can tap on the edges of the screen like you were changing pages in a typical book and it will move from one paragraph to the next as well as to the next page when you are at the last paragraph. Likewise, while the strips themselves initially seem small, you can double tap on them to fill the entire Kindle Fire screen.
Garry Trudeau mentions in his introduction that the four books that make up the complete retrospective only contain about 13% of the more than 14,000 published Doonesbury strips and while I'd like access to all of them, what you do get is extremely well-presented and in my opinion well worth the asking price."
